19. Ashanti
Like many other r’n’b stars of the decade, Ashanti got her big break by first serving as a guest on the tracks of other more popular stars. In the 2000s, rappers were all about crossing over. They wanted to become pop stars that even soccer moms could love.
And the best way to do that was to record an urban love song and have a good looking girl singing on the chorus. And that’s where Ashanti comes in. She did that for two huge singles in 2002, for Ja Rule’s Always On Time and Fat Joe’s What’s Luv? The success of these two tracks already made Ashanti a household name, so when it came time for her to release her first solo album, everyone already knew who she was.
Ashanti was a part of Ja Rule’s Murder Inc. label, so as long as they were hot, she was hot. Unfortunately, they crew was not hot for much longer, and once they fizzled out, so did Ashanti’s popularity. She still looks great, though.
