In the 2000s, when you were a rapper, it was all about balance. You needed to be hard enough for the dudes, but cuddly and nice enough for the women as well. And there was nobody who was able to do that better than Nelly at the time.
He had some hard club bangers, but he rapped in a very melodic and catchy way that appealed to everyone, especially to radio stations. However, these types of rappers tend to quickly lose their way.
Just like Ja Rule, Nelly lost all of his street cred and started making love songs and club songs strictly for the girls. While he did continue to have hits throughout the decade, it seems that every album did a little worse than the last one until he ran out of gas completely.
