4. Kirk Douglas and Anne Buydens
When you find true love, you just know it. This feeling is what led Kirk to leave his then fiancé, Pier Angeli and elope with Anne to Las Vegas in 1954. Kirk was 37 years old when they got married and Anne was only 24.
“I think I’m more romantic than ever. A woman knows the man she wants to marry and a man knows the woman he doesn’t want to be without,” Kirk once said about their love.
Kirk survived a stroke and Anne beat breast cancer. Besides, they both survived his infidelities with Joan Crawford, Gene Tierney, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich and many other famous women.
“I had no illusions about that [infidelities]. But I told him, ‘Look. I’ll understand a lot of things if you tell me. But if I hear it from others and it has happened, that would hurt me very badly.’’
Kirk admitted he was the one to blame for their hard times.
“I think I was most to blame for our problems, because I hid behind the mind-set of ‘I am an artist, an artist!'”
The couple renewed their vows in 2004 for their 50th anniversary.
