We’re warning you in advance, this is probably the weirdest news you’ll read today. If you’re ready, here we go. R&B singer Akon’s planning to provide electricity to one million households in Africa by the end of the year.

Okay, maybe not that weird, but surely unexpected.

The Akon Lighting Africa campaign, supported by charity officials and local corporation executives, aims to provide solar panels and promote energy sufficiency across the continent.

During February, the singer went to his native Senegal and other places including Burkina Faso, Mali, Gabon, Guinea, and Gambia in order to win support from top politicians of the nine African countries.

When asked by a follower on Twitter how the campaign was going, the Smack That hitmaker responded, “Incredible! We are getting a great response from many of the leaders I met with. We’ve got to keep up the momentum.”

Interestingly, Akon had a little help with the administration of the Republic of Guinea, as his uncle, Idrissa Thiam, is the Minister of Energy.
