Jimmy Jean-Louis’ father, Lephene, was shot dead during a store robbery.
The 78-year old was accidentally shot in the abdomen when three unknown men tried to rob a store where he was shopping in Torcelle, Haiti on April 6.
He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, April 10.
His son has returned to the country for the memorial service scheduled for Wednesday, April 16.
A statement released form the family reads, “We appreciate the outpouring of love and concern shown at this time of loss. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this difficult time, and keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Their publicist also released a statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Lephène Jean-Louis, the beloved father of actor and philanthropist Jimmy Jean-Louis (NBC Heroes, Toussaint Louverture). Mr. Jean-Louis was wounded by a single bullet to the abdomen, and passed away in the hospital on Thursday morning, of complications from his injuries.”
This incident followed a devastating earthquake in 2010 in Haiti, when Jimmy thought his parents were both dead. He succeeded to locate them and reunite with them on the site.
“It is very difficult coping with the situation. We still have not spoken to all of my family because it is such chaos and we can’t get in touch but I am relieved to know my parents are alive,” Jimmy said about the time he didn’t know if they were alive.
