Music mogul Simon Cowell defended his boy band One Direction after the group made headlines following the release of a video showing them smoking weed leaked online. He also named them the “hardest working” music act.

Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik hit headlines last week when the infamous footage featuring them in Peru leaked online.

They have yet to comment on the video. However, now their mentor Cowell, who created the band during the 2010 series of Britain’s The X Factor, publicly defended young men by praising their work ethic.

During a red carpet interview on Monday, June 2 he stated, “I can’t really comment on that. What I can say, however… is they are the hardest working boys I’ve ever worked with, they still haven’t changed. They’re really respectful to their fans, they’re a great British export.”

When he was asked what advice he could give for the band following the scandal, he said, “You know what, I can’t comment on that. It’s a private matter… I hope the fans stay loyal.”

Liam Payne is the only member of the band who commented on the incident. He took to Twitter.com over the last weekend to apologize to fans. He explained the group has a lot of growing up” to do.”

More on Cowell news, he recently revealed the new X Favtor judge will be a woman. He said, “We’ve settled on someone and we’re going to make an announcement this week,” he adds. “It’s going to be a girl, but I can’t say who as the contract isn’t signed yet. It’s not just finding a name, it’s finding someone who will do the job. They have to be able to work with the artists and give up a lot of their time, and that’s why it’s a long decision.
