It may seem like celebrities live a charmed life: they wear designer clothing, ride around in limos and always look on top of their game in front of the cameras.
However, many stars battle invisible demons just like the rest of us.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental illness affects one in four adults and many of your Hollywood favorites are among that number.
Following are 16 celebrities who lead successful lives in spite of mental illness.
Publicly disclosed as a personality disorder, Britney’s poor mental health led to an extremely public mental breakdown in 2008, prompting the court to appoint a guardian to make decisions for her.
There were many speculations on how she has ADHD problems, and later the public and even her friends thought she had bipolar disorder.
Whatever it was at the moment, she was facing serious legal issues for occasional child endangerment possibilities.
Finally, she lost the custody over her two children. If the public was ever hostile toward her, this was the time. Her mental break down happened in front of the whole planet and everyone was judging her.
She was named a bad mother, a drug addict and all kinds of bad names for a girl-next-door she once used to be.
In February 2007, Spears endured in a drug rehabilitation facility in Antigua for less than a day. That same night, she shaved her head at a hair salon in Tarzana, Los Angeles.
She admitted herself to other treatment clinics in the the following weeks.
In May 2007, she produced a series of promotional concerts at House of Blues venues, with the name The M+M’s Tour.
In October 2007, Spears lost physical custody of her children to former husband Federline. The reasons of the court ruling were never revealed to the public. She was also sued by Louis Vuitton for her 2005 music video “Do Somethin” for decorating her Hummer interior in Louis Vuitton cherry blossom fabric, which resulted in her video being banned on European TV stations.
Bad times for pop icon.
