The actor put on 70 pounds for his Oscar-winning performance as infamous dictator Idi Amin. Whitaker later lost it all and then some, which he attributes to his newly adopted vegetarian diet and his participation in martial arts. Forest Steven Whitaker was born in Longview, Texas, and his family moved to Carson, California when he was four.

He attended Cal Poly Pomona on a football scholarship, but due to a serious back injury, he changed his major to music and even toured England with the Cal Poly Chamber Singers in 1980. He was accepted to the Music Conservatory at the University of Southern California to study opera as a tenor, and subsequently was accepted into the University’s Drama Conservatory graduating in 1982.

He also earned a scholarship to the Berkeley, California branch of the Drama Studio London. He started his acting career at the age of 21 and because of his height and weight was often cast as an athlete. Whitaker made his film debut in the comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) wherein he played a footballer. His next role was in a movie Vision Quest (1985) where he got the role of a wrestler. He went on to play another sports-oriented student, a wrestler, in his second film Vision Quest (1985).

However, one year later, in 1986 he made his big breakthrough appearing in both Martin Scorsese’s film, The Color of Money (with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise), and in Oliver Stone’s Platoon. He’s a vegetarian and he even recorded a public service announcement with his daughter, True, promoting vegetarianism on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
