Best Things Are For Free: 12 Years A Slave Written Free Of Charge

John-Ridley

You’ve probably heard the old proverb “the best things in life are free”. Well, it seems scriptwriter John Ridley agrees as he wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-nominated movie, 12 Years a Slave, completely for free.

Ridley accepted to turn the memoirs of former slave Solomon Northup into a movie script as a special project. For such a project it was assumed that he’d be paid when production starts.

Ridley said, “There was no development money whatsoever for this project, so I said I’d take it on as a spec project, which means I’ll write it for free.”

Ridley also added, “It was either going to be a script that wowed people and show how powerful that memoir and that story was, and how pertinent it is. That was the difficulty of it. That was something that came to me in a partnership, but ultimately it was a choice of four year’s work without taking a penny.”

However, Ridley received a fee after involving Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company that secured the funding.

His script got him an Oscar nomination in the Adapted Screenplay category, which is to be held next month. Besides the nomination for the adapted screenplay, 12 Years A Slave received eight more Oscar nominations, including Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Best Picture.
