Madonna Received Death Threats For Supporting Pussy Riot
During an Amnesty International concert on Wednesday, pop diva Madonna introduced punk stars Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who recently got out of jail. However, she confirmed that she also received a couple of death threats during her tour in Russia.
Since the arrest of the Pussy Riot members in 2010, Madonna has been a fierce supporter and also held a supporting tour in Russia during the trial of the punk-girls.
During the concert Bringing Human Rights Home by Amnesty International at New York City’s Barclays Center, Madonna admitted receiving death threats during her time in Russia.
Madonna told the audience, “I’ve always considered myself a freedom fighter since the early ’80s when I realized I had a voice and I could sing more than songs about being a material girl or feeling like a virgin. And I have definitely paid for and have been punished for speaking my mind and for sticking my neck out for this kind of discrimination. But that’s OK.”
Alekhina and Tolokonnikova added, “Freedom is not a given. It is something we have to fight for every day. It is our duty to speak for those who are still behind bars.”
The three members of Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in prison after performing a satirical punk song in a Moscow church against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
