Sean Penn Stands Behind His Green Card Joke

1

Sean Penn has finally decided to comment on the controversy that he caused during the presentation of the Oscar for the Best Movie to Alejandro Iñárritu for his film Birdman.

In case you do not recall the most memorable part of this year’s Academy Awards, let us remind you. Penn was responsible for revealing the winner of the coveted award and he introduced Iñárritu as the winner with the words, “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?”

At first glance, this does look as a very insensitive or outright insulting and bigoted intro for the Mexican-born director and his excellent movie. However, it needs to be pointed out that the two are very good friends and that Penn did this to make a sarcastic comment on the official US stand on immigration that he sees as xenophobic.

Not only did Penn think that he did not need apologize, but he added, “In fact, I have a big (expletive) you for every…anybody who is so stupid not to have gotten the irony when you’ve got a country that is so xenophobic.”

What do you think about this whole controversy and Penn’s recent comments?
