7. Robert Duvall

A few years back, “The Godfather” star and perpetual A-lister Robert Duvall revealed that he endorsed Mitt Romney for president back in 2012 while he was on the radio show of the conservative host Laura Ingraham, according to a Paxalles article.

He also narrated a video for the Republican National Convention back in 2008, lending his vocal talents in a way that made it very clear he endorsed what was being said.

Duvall has been known in Hollywood as a longtime Republican, yet his views are more complex and nuanced than those of many of his peers.

However, when asked if it is tough to be a Republican in Hollywood, Duvall replied that he’s actually been tempted to vote independent in more recent times. He has pointed out that John F. Kennedy and other Democrats actually have had very bad Civil Rights voting records throughout the years and that the Rockefeller family was actually much more liberal and supportive overall about the rights of African Americans.

He points out that accepted history often belies the truth of politics and the state of things in America. Duvall is also confused by the fact that all of the atrocities committed in the South that revolved around the race issue were in fact committed by Democrats. However, in more recent times, everything has been “turned around” in terms of which is the more compassionate party.

Duvall also believes in a woman’s right to choose, while the vast majority of Republicans do not. While Duvall may have many Republican views, he definitely does not align with all of their values and talking points. He has been and continues to be a maverick of sorts, unafraid to put forward conservative views in Hollywood, but also not so locked into them that he is unwilling to question the veracity of the party from one issue to the next.
