Joaquin Phoenix, best known as an actor and activist, lives his life as a declared atheist. When he was a child, his parents were briefly a part of a cult called Children of God, which attracted people by saying promiscuous sex was a way to get closer to God.
Still, his family did not follow any religious rules very strictly. Although he claims to have taken the best parts of all religions, he does not believe in the afterlife.
Phoenix is also a vegan and an animal rights activist who has participated in several PETA ads and has made many public statements about his beliefs and the cruelty towards animals. This might be another thing that put him off religion, since all religions have some sort of animal sacrifice as a crucial part of proving the strength of your faith.
