The life of the incredibly talented Australian was cut way too short on January 22, 2008, after he had completed his legendary role of the Joker in The Dark Knight, which he didn’t live to see in theaters. He was 28, freshly separated from Michelle Williams and battling with issues that included drug and prescription pill addiction, severe chronic insomnia and depression. The toxicology report showed that the cause of death was a fatal cocktail of sleeping pills, anxiety medication and painkillers. It was never determined whether or not the overdose was intentional.

According to Michelle Williams, his longtime partner and mother of his daughter, Ledger battled with insomnia for a long time. He was also prone to depression and his condition must have taken a turn for the worse after he and Williams split. He adored his daughter Matilda, who was two at the time of his death, and being away from her devastated him.
