Antony Hegarty, better known as Anohni, received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “Manta Ray,” but decided to boycott the ceremony because the Academy announced they wouldn’t include her song on the Oscar telecast.

The musician responded with an angry essay that detailed her “embarrassment and anger” about the situation. Anohni did not accuse the producers of excluding her because she is a transgender, but instead called it “a system of social oppression.

Anohni was very excited about her nomination, especially about the fact that she’s the second openly transgender person ever to be nominated for an Oscar. Several weeks later, however, she found out that producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin decided only to stage performances from artists that are “deemed commercially viable.”

Anohni claims that it felt very degrading to be excluded in such a manner, especially after learning that Dave Grohl, who wasn’t even nominated, will play at the ceremony.

Artists who will perform at the Oscars are Sam Smith, Lady Gaga and The Weeknd.
