A stunningly good boxer, Mike became the youngest heavyweight champion ever in 1986. Six years later, however, he was sentenced to six years in prison for the raping of beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington, who was 18 at the time, in an Indianapolis hotel room. His former manager and lifelong friend Rory Holloway said:
“The rape case was inevitable. I’m surprised more girls didn’t make claims against him.”
The whole story was gruesome and emotional, and Tyson’s trial didn’t go without tears. Washington claimed that she repeatedly begged Tyson to stop, to which he responded by pinning her to the ground even harder and proceeding. He was ultimately sentenced to six years of prison, of which he served three. Upon release, he engaged in a series of comeback fights but is now broke, unable to even pay off his IRS debts.
