On paper, it sounded like a great idea – having Lady Gaga pay a much-deserved tribute to the late David Bowie at this year’s Grammys. And according to most people, it actually turned out fine.More than fine.
Celebrities and mere mortals alike have been standing in line to share their exhilaration with Gaga’s performance, praising her once again as the greatest artist of her time. In reality, her tribute wasn’t all that good, honestly. And we’re not even talking about the fact she looked like 1990s Bette Midler who suffered a carotene overdose. We are talking more important stuff here.
For one, she did infinitesimally tiny portions of Bowie’s hit songs, rendering them totally pedestrian by reducing them to a few lines here and there. Also, it all seemed a bit tired, for some reason. You could see that she was having fun, the musicians were doing a splendid job, but it was all a bit winded. Yes, winded would be the perfect word. Maybe ‘meh.’ And you do not pay tribute to Bowie with ‘meh.’
